Apropos your contributions #179 and #180 above, in my opinion at least Mr Guise, the headmaster involved in the notorious Helston Grammar incident was a type 1 teacher who made use of type 3 techniques. He might well have got away with it, especially if he had not overdone the indignities he inflicted on the unfortunate girls and had punished the boys involved in the post-rehearsal naughtiness as well.
But apparently at least one of the boys seems to have confessed all when confronted with the caretaker’s report and Guise’s MRA (Moral Re-Armament) movement principles seem to have precluded punishment where an infraction was promptly admitted. Somehow this was extended to both boys, but not to the girls, who were apparently more reluctant to admit guilt. And then of course Guise was close to retirement. He may have overdone the punishment of the girls urged on by subconscious prompts that his schoolgirl spanking days were now very limited. The rest is history.
The very popular and well regarded teacher you mention threatening first year girls with an over the knee spanking might have been a type 1 who used his status to occasionally indulge in such activities. But equally he might have had at least incipient type 3 ‘bread and circuses’ tendencies. With several potential ‘victims’ in the form of the misbehaving first year girls and an audience of other pupils passing along the corridor between classes he may have decided to give the technique a dry run to see how everybody reacted, free of the need to actually implement his threat.
In my day bread and circuses teachers were fairly common. Even Miss B who administered my oft related (so I’ll let everybody off this time ) spanked leg was a bread and circuses adherent, though a highly specialised one. She collected 12 or 15 or so boys and girls from an assortment of classes for minor infractions a couple of times a term when she was on playground duty, lined them up in front of her class, and one by one administered the spankings. This not only provided entertainment for her own class, provided they weren’t in the queue, but also served to maintain her reputation as a strict disciplinarian. In fact, as I found the following year in her class she was a very friendly person and a superb teacher.
Alas, in state schools at least, such information as I have access to suggests that the bread and circuses teacher is pretty much a dead duck. The reasons for the demise are fairly obvious. The rigid treadmill of the curriculum leaves little time for faux in-class dramatics. Further, corporal punishment of the mild but embarrassing type was virtually a staple of the repertoire. It is quite difficult to make a classmate’s detention or negative good conduct mark amusing to other pupils.

In the 50s, the OTK slappings of girls by a male teacher at my junior school was. as I have reported previously, far from uncommon but the target was usually the bare upper thigh .Sometimes just the right one sometimes both. Usually resulting with the recipient grimacing with pain afterwards. As the teacher was usually seated behind his desk at the time , the desk hid much of the action from view.
For the record similar treatment probably even harder was dished out to young boys in short trousers and I myself was a recipient on a couple of occasions.
Notwithstanding my peccadillos in later years I found it a little disturbing and upsetting at the time seeing friends and children I liked being dealt with in this way and indeed still very much consider the physical chastisement of pre teens wrong.

The other male teacher- the pervert one- was a classic opportunist who created a disciplinary aura. From the types of case that have reach the courts of late, I’d say he managed to fulfill many fantasies, but rarely, and only with carefully chosen girl victims after assessing her parents. This is how I lived it, and the time, when I visited some of those teachers in the nursing home, I was able to confirm it.

It was a long agony, more than eighteen years, pretending to pray without doing so. I didn’t become a great Christian but I did become an excellent actress.
At my boarding school, there was a lot of non-sexual slapping, meat was one of the worst sins. That was the dominant ideology.

At my boys school the head did cane, never knew of any occasion he did so (one of the actual forms of SCP in the UK- last resort, done by head, happens a couple of times a year total). One or two male teachers would slap really misbehaving kids on the head- witnessed this twice. Once a friend was really pushing it, and honestly the teacher, given the circumstances, was justified. The other time was a six-former- in the six-form facility- during actual A-level time- during whatever you called it when the boys were chilling – getting slapped in the face for ‘cheek’. Never had that teacher- immediately concluded at 18 that the bloke was a psycho. A reason to suspect he may have been something worse, but won’t go into that here. Ours was a very well ordered boys school, and your common or garden pervert had no chance.
Ours was not a religious school per-se but did have the standard religious assemblies and RE lessons. Having disposed of organised religion nonsense at maybe 8, I found such a waste of my time, but no more so than most of what gets dumped on people at school. However I did not bow my head at assembly nor mouth any hymn/prayer nonsense. I’ve never been a normie nor a sheep, and heaven help the soul that thought to clash with mine over this. I was a nice quiet kid who benefited from his education as much as it suited me, but as my posts here may suggest, I’ve never taken rubbish from anyone who sought to persuade me their sad normie indoctrinated believe systems could be imposed on me. Such a will radiates from one, which is why I think they were smart enough to appreciate it.
I’m sorry to say it, but acting weak-willed and being weak-willed can soon become one and the same. Demanding respect can be hard, but it is always worth the effort. But I know it was harder for girls then. Too many believed a ‘difficult’ girl needed to be broken whereas a ‘difficult’ boy needed to be guided.

You mention your long grown classmates who deny their mistreatment, but as I said in some other post, this is common. If the abuse is not universally condemned (say like rape or other clear assault), the feeling is that the person has nothing to gain by recalling or reliving their schooldays. So they edit it out. Some (very common) blank out their entire school experience- hating the time when they where subservient to another.
Those of us that have no issue thinking about or relating any aspect of our schooling are actually quite rare, in my direct experience.
I will say this. I received extremely few, and very minor non-class punishments during my schooling, and I strongly resented each one. Also happens I was guilty of nothing each time, but was in the presence of others that may have been misbehaving in a minor way. Yeah, I was just about perfect (which I say with no irony, since it struck me from the beginning that behaving otherwise was counterproductive to me).
I can only guess what would have happened in a Scottish school where some filthy bastard had the right to strap the entire class to enjoy getting his strap across the hands of boys and girls that otherwise he could not punish. And here you learn exactly why so few people want to think or share such memories. And when a person lets go and details the rotten horror of their treatment, the pain that their post contains is literally soul burning.
Over and over I’ve seen posts from women, for whom their mistreatment meant their entire compulsory education was one useless abusive hell, beyond learning to read, write and do simple maths. Many afterwards, in their 20s, actually redid much learning at college and finally got somewhere.
One woman, who herself had a relatively decent experience in Scotland (you know, only being strapped to tears maybe a few dozen times in her first five years of secondary school by some sadistic male teacher), related this story, because it so pissed her off. She was in the top stream doing A-levels, and her male teacher, for answering a question wrong, seriously tried to brow beat her into taking a sound hand strapping.
I cannot imagine what it would be like being female, surrounded by dangerous abusive males in positions of authority. I mean those male effers are literally saying “if you are a smart girl, you might as well lean into the kink and try to ‘enjoy’ it, because what other choice do you have”.

The most dangerous abusers are those who you look at and say “they cannot be doing this for their own pleasure”. Hierarchy, one’s position in the pecking order- concepts of respect and position- well they take us to a very problematic space when many participants have no desire to conform to would-be structure.
I mean one presupposes that many teachers began their careers with good intentions, but the first time the class bullies worked so hard to give them trouble, with apparently the rest of the class sniggering in approval, all that went out of the window. Then it becomes the psychology of imposing order on the masses, whatever that takes. And that means any given member of the mass needs to feel smaller than the teacher. And down the slope we all fall.
In the S.T.O.P.P. monthly report was the story of a fifth-form girl, head of class, with no punishments at all for a year (or more), running away from school when told she faced a severe strapping for ‘insulting’ her class form teacher during some class banter. In the British army, disrespecting a commanding officer in front of others in your unit is a very serious offence too. Loss of face = loss of authority = danger of mob rule. But how is that principle to the average schoolchild? And yet it justifies so much nastiness at school, even when SCP is banned. Yet if authority falls, and chaos rules, again the nastiness at school becomes awful.

1) The tawse was the only instrument of CP allowed
2) It could only be administered to the outstretched hand NOT the buttocks

4) As a result the tawse was used pretty liberally, admittedly on boys more than girls but I suspect the incidence of girls receiving CP in Scotland was far higher than in England or Wales, and it was not gender-specific, male teachers belted girls and female teachers belted boys according to who had misbehaved where.
So finding Scottish women admitting to having been belted isn’t difficult, I remember seeing on a program like “Antiques Roadshow” someone bring in an old tawse, all the women knew what it was and had been familiar with it being used on them!

The comparison with Scotland and the belt is identical. And no-one claims the caning that happens in African schools is acceptable, or has no effect on girls. The excuses for caning match exactly the excuse for belting.
